About the Institute

Founded in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College by Mr. G. Viswanathan, former Member of Parliament and Minister in the Government of Tamil Nadu, it was promoted by the North Arcot Educational and Charitable Trust, Vellore. The Institute was conferred the 'Deemed University Status' in recognition of its academic excellence by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, and renamed it as Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT). It has a vision to impart quality technical education to cater to the needs of all societies around the globe and maintain a high standard of discipline through a dedicated, involved and committed staff, it strives not only to bring out knowledge wise superior students but also to make them ethically strong.

Facilities

VIT campus spread across a vast area of 250 acres. A striking feature of VIT is the well-planned and comprehensive infrastructure provided for both students and faculty. The latest technologies are provided in the computing centres with 55 servers and over 1000 computers. Modern laboratories enable students and researchers to keep abreast of emerging trends and applications.

VIT's Library is an unique feature of the campus and is housed in a 25,000 sq.ft. centrally air conditioned building. It has over 40,000 books, 4,400 back volumes of scientific and technical periodicals and extensive non-print learning resources. The library also subscribes to 300 specialised journals, both Indian and foreign.

Established a CAM (Computer aided Manufacturing) Centre with CNC trainer lathe, CNC vertical production milling machine and six axis (SCARA Robot. The students are given hands on experience in CNC machines programming and operations. A CAD (Computer Aided Design) Centre with latest software has been established.

The Institute has a dedicated 65 Kb and 2 Mb leased line connectivity to internet through VSNL and Dishnet DSL, Providing global information access to the staff and students. E-mail accounts are provided for all students and staff.

Other Amenities

VIT has excellent sports facility that include many outdoor / indoor playgrounds, an outdoor stadium on a 30 acre plot with a 400 m athletic track and seating for 2000 students in the covered stand. It has all facilities needed to prepare sports persons to participate in high level competition.

VIT has developed a cosmopolitan culture and healthy balance of formal and non-formal interaction that exists amongst faculty, students and researchers. Students from all States of India are studying here. There are about 200 students from countries like Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, UAE, Uganda and other countries.

VIT's hostels (6 men's and 2 women's) provide hygienic, comfortable living for students. The international Student's Hostel offers single room facilities with ISD in all rooms.

Student Support Services

The Health Centre, 1000 sq.ft. in area, has well qualified medical professional on duty. There are spacious and separate male and female wards. The Centre provides round the clock services and keeps in regular touch with the leading hospitals in Vellore. Ambulance, Transport and Canteen facilities are available.
